October 1st is International Day for Older Persons!

International Day for Older Persons began in December 1990, and was first celebrated on October 1st 1991. This day was created to raise awareness of hardships that our elderly go through such as senior abuse and neglect. This day was also created to encourage people to appreciate the elderly and what they do for our society. They play an important role by passing on their knowledge, shaping future generations, and helping families with anything they can.

Instated by the United Nations, the theme of 2013’s International Day for Older Persons is “The future we want: what older persons are saying”. This has been chosen as the theme “to draw attention to the efforts of older persons, civil society organizations, United Nations organizations and Member States to place the issue of ageing on the international development agenda.” This is an important “national awareness day” that is known worldwide, from New York to the UK, and is implemented only to serve a positive influence for all who choose to recognize it.

We all have someone in our lives that needs more appreciation, attention and care, so take this day to make the extra effort to see your grandparents, family friends, and even neighbors, bring them a nice gift, and give them your time.
